Finding

This finding looks at the relationship between family structure and mothers’ per-capita income.

On average, never-married and divorced mothers had much lower per-capita family incomes compared to married mothers regardless of their living arrangements. Cohabiting single-mothers did the best among non-married mothers but still had lower per-capita incomes than married mothers.

Sample or Data Description
The U.S. data were drawn from the Current Population Survey (CPS), a nationally representative survey. This study used the March 1996 wave of the CPS and included 13,003 mothers between the ages of 18 and 41.
