This finding looks at the relationship between perception of mothers' disapproval and quality of mother/adolescent relationship and adolescents' sexual behavior.

Youths who reported both the highest level of mother's disapproval of their being sexually active and the highest level of quality of relationship with their mother were more than 17 times less likely to be sexually active in the 12 months after they were surveyed than peers who reported the lowest levels of mothers' disapproval and mother-adolescent relationship.


Sample or Data Description
Data came from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The analytic sample used a sub-sample of the Add Health dataset, which consisted of 7th to 11th grades students who completed both Wave 1 (1994/1995) and Wave 2 (1996).
