Finding

This finding looks at the relationship between mothers’ marital status and fulfillment of the maternal role.

Married mothers behaved more positively toward their infants and created better home environments than cohabiting or single mothers did in two consecutive assessments.

Sample or Data Description
Data collected for 1,364 children nationwide. Families were recruited through hospital visits to women (N = 8,986) giving birth during selected 24-hour intervals at 10 sites.
