Finding

This finding looks at the relationship between out-of-wedlock fatherhood and poverty status.

Men who fathered a child outside of marriage were 70 percent to 90 percent more likely to be poor compared to men who never had children before marriage. Their risk of poverty varied with the age at which they became fathers.

Sample or Data Description
Data come from the 1993-wave of National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY), in which the male respondents ranged in age from 28 to 35.
